Australia

10 years ago, my family and i embarked on the lengthy journey to Melbourne, Australia to spend Christmas, New Year and most importantly my 9th birthday with my uncle who was working over there at the time.

Although I was only 8, Australia is a trip I will never forget for many reasons, some of which I will share with you now!

Apologies in advance for the quality of these photos, they were taken on a Samsung in 2013.

Here's my 8 year old guide to Australia:

SYDNEY

During our stay we drove a painstaking 10 hours to visit Sydney. We obviously had to see the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour but honestly, in typical child fashion, i wasn't all that interested. My mum managed to snap a very rare picture of me smiling while we were on a boat across the harbour.

Despite the sightseeing, my favourite part about Sydney was the hotel we stayed in - not because it was beautiful but because every key card had a different song linked to it so when you scanned your card to use the lift your song would play – my song was Sexyback by Justin Timberlake.

CHRISTMAS

I experienced the biggest culture shock when I woke up on Christmas morning to the sun shining through my window. Christmas is 100% my favourite time of year, but it didn't have the same cosy feeling in Australia as it did back home. Having a barbecue for Christmas dinner and going to the beach after opening my presents was one of the weirdest experiences of my life, but i loved it.

EUREKA SKYDECK

For my birthday we ventured to the Eureka Skydeck – one of Australia’s tallest skyscrapers measuring 975ft! The concept is basically a glass box stuck onto the side of this building (on the 88th floor) designed to frighten the life out of you. You stand in the box and sound effects as if the glass is breaking and the box is creaking etc. play through the speakers. It was so much fun and a perfect way to round off our trip to Australia. However, my mum didn’t take part and had to leave because she was so scared –  i was extremely disappointed and it's safe to say I’ve never forgiven her.

I hope you enjoyed this small snippet of my experience in Australia! There’s so many more things I could talk about and I'm desperate to go back in the near future so that I can appreciate it even more now that I'm older.
